Bed Bugs in Upholstered Furniture

Armchairs, recliners, ottomans and upholstered benches share the features bed bugs use: fabric seams, hidden frames and someone sitting still for long periods. They are checked during any thorough inspection, not just the bed.

Why upholstered seating is affected

Bed bugs shelter close to a reliable host. A chair used for hours each evening can hold activity even when the bedroom looks clear, which is one reason single-room treatment sometimes fails.

What to check

  • Seat and back cushion seams, including the underside
  • Arm folds, piping and decorative stitching
  • Recliner mechanisms, springs and metal framework
  • Dust covers on the underside of the item
  • The floor and skirting immediately around the item

Treatment considerations

Whether an upholstered item can be treated effectively depends on its construction and the extent of the activity. A professional inspection is the right way to establish that, rather than a judgement made from photographs or a checklist online.

If an item is being removed

Where a professional has advised removal, or the item was due for replacement anyway, contain the item before moving it and follow local disposal rules. Avoid carrying uncovered items through shared corridors and lifts.
