Bed Bugs in Headboards and Bed Frames

A headboard sits directly against a sleeping host and is full of joints, fixings and gaps. It is one of the first places a professional inspects, and often holds more activity than the mattress.

Where activity concentrates

  • The back of the headboard and the wall behind it
  • Upholstered headboard seams, buttons and piping
  • Slats and the pockets where slats meet the rails
  • Bolts, brackets and corner fixings
  • The junction between frame and box spring

Inspecting the frame

  1. Pull the bed away from the wall.
  2. Lift or unmount the headboard where it is safe to do so and check the reverse face.
  3. Check each slat and each fixing point.
  4. Check the wall, skirting and any nearby socket plate or picture frame.

Treatment considerations

Frames are usually treated in place alongside the rest of the room. Where a frame is already damaged or a provider advises otherwise, removal may be discussed as part of the plan.
